Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction (formerly Orange Prize for Fiction)
In January 1992, a group of journalists, reviewers, agents, publishers, librarians, booksellers met to try to introduce a prize that would be less traditional and that would put readers at the center. They were concerned that many of the biggest literary prizes often overlooked wonderful writing by women. Since then, the Prize has established itself as a highlight of the literary calendar. The prize is worth £30,000, or about $45,955 American.
